Stoke St. Michael's church

Camera No. 17

Oh my, how you've grown! Stoke Church has had many alterations and extensions over the centuries, and more than one name, too. Until some time around the First World War it was dedicated to St. Chad. However, by the 1930s it had become St. Michaels - around the same time that it received its last major increase in size. As the older photos below, taken around the 1910s, show, the 14th century southern side had three bays to the right (east) of the porched entrance, which has since been expended to five.

Clicking on the old photographs above or below will bring us back up to date.

if you wish to see all of the images separately.

In the 19th century, however, two major alterations were made, with a plan of 1827, showing a new north aisle but still only a single bay either side of the entrance porch. Plans of 1861 show the two extra south-aisle bays added and a much extended chancel and north aisle. The modern photographs show the current five bays to the porch's east and a chancel extending beyond.
